Conference to Focus on Asia as Emerged Market, March 17

The student-run 12th annual Asia Business Conference on March 17 at Haas will explore the idea that Asia is not an emerging market but a market that has already emerged.

The theme of the event, which will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., is "The Emerged Market – Epicenter of Growth, Consumption, and Innovation."

Conference chair Satoru Tanabe, MBA 12, said that the aim this year is to change perceptions about Asia and highlight innovative Asian business models. He said he wants people to begin considering markets in Asia in the same light as the highly evolved markets of the United States and Europe.

“I hope people get new insights into Asia to see what is really happening there,” he says. “And I hope that the conference will provide opportunities for people to meet others interested in Asia.”

This year’s three keynote speakers are:

  • G. Paul Matthews, founder of Matthews International Capital Management, an investment firm focused on Asia. Matthews will offer a macro-perspective on Asian markets, which he has been actively investing in since 1982.
  • Paul M.F. Cheng, author of On Equal Terms: Redefining China's Relationship with America and the West. Born in China, raised in Hong Kong, and educated in the United States, including an MBA from Wharton, Cheng is a businessman and politician with an international career spanning many decades. He is now a board member and adviser to companies in China and Asia as well as being active in the private equity arena.
  • Wayne Wei-Ming Dai, BA 83 (Comp. Sci.), PhD 88 (Elect. Engineer.), founder and CEO, VeriSilicon Holdings and president of the Berkeley Shanghai Club. Dai was elected one of the top ten venture-backed entrepreneurs and top ten talents of science and technology in China in 2005.

The conference is the largest Asia-focused, student-organized conference on the West Coast. It attracted 500 attendees last year. The organizers are in the process of updating the conference website at berkeleyabc.org. To buy tickets, visit http://haasabc2012.eventbrite.com/.
